Understanding Performance And Running Costs Of Electric Cookers

In the past the purchase of both gas and electric cookers would be a considered one. Appliances tended to be very expensive and consumers would take a long time weighing up their available options before parting with their money. In the modern era less time is spent considering what is the right option. This is partly thanks to the fact that the price of appliances is now much lower due to reduced manufacturing costs. Consumers are happy to spend relatively small amounts without investing too much time researching the best option for them. This can be a real mistake and end up costing them money in the long term and also leave them frustrated with their purchase.

Considering Size

The first factor to consider when looking at cookers, be they electric or gas, is the size you will require. Obviously models with a larger oven capacity will cost more to run then smaller alternatives. So if you are single or a couple without children then it may be wise to go for a smaller option. Families that will need to cram more food into the cooker should of course go with larger capacity models.

Most countries break down gas and electric cookers into three size categories; small medium and large. Below are the capacities of each size and the average energy consumption per usage for A rated electric cookers:

  • Small: 12 - 35 litres – 0.60 kWh
  • Medium: 35 – 65 litres – 0.80 kWh
  • Large : 65+ litres – 1.00 kWh

The difference in energy costs between countries and constantly fluctuating prices means that it is impossible to provide accurate running costs here. However, a quick check on your last electricity bill should reveal how much you are being charged for your electricity and leave you with an easy calculation to work out the average cost charge.

The Hob

There has been a growing trend in recent years towards electric cookers. This is partly down to the fact that there has been an increase in the number of built-in solutions where electric models are easier to fit. Another factor is that electric cookers are considered to give a more even cooking experience. However, there is still a strong tradition amongst consumers to go for gas hobs as they provide instant heat and the temperature is easier to control. A gas hob can also be a wise move in terms of running costs; although gas hobs use more energy than electric ones, the lower price of gas makes them less costly to run.
